United Brotherhood of Carpenters
Laurence-Hovenier, Inc. has been
a signatory union contractor since its inception. There have been
major swings of attitude towards the unions in the last couple
of decades, but we feel that the current benefits greatly outweigh
the alternatives for our employees in this industry. The Carpenters'
Union has made great strides in recent years to recognize the
major issues that were diminishing its ranks. In particular,
they have helped to establish a workers' compensation program
in conjunction with insurance carriers that have minimized fraud
and reserve claims.
Residential Contractors Association
This organization was founded in 1982 by owners and representatives
of some of Southern California's largest and oldest framing
companies as a body to negotiate with the Carpenters' Union of
America. With union representation decreasing and the welfare of our workforce
at stake, the Association's members recognized the needs and
benefits associated with keeping a relationship with the unions'
workforce and established training facilities. In addition, members of
the association had loyal and long-time employees that were in jeopardy
of losing their accrued benefits. Fred Hovenier
is an active member on the Association's negotiating committee
that has made great strides in changing old line union thinking
into positive growth and continued member benefits, while allowing
the contractors to remain competitive in the bidding process.
Building Industry of America
Laurence-Hovenier, Inc. is in current good standing with the
Southern California division of the Building Industry of America.
We feel this organization is very beneficial in promoting and
monitoring building industry awareness from the local community
level to the State and National legislation, virtually touching
everyone's lives.
Home Builders Council
A division of the BIA, specifically dealing with home building
issues. An annual event staged by the HBC is a Design/Build Competition
staged for local community colleges, high schools and Regional
Occupations Programs. This event allows teams from the schools
to receive a hands-on approach to building full-size playhouses
during a weekend event in April. This past event consisted of
13 teams, 170 students and teachers along with thousands of dollars
of donated materials and the services of local architects, building
inspectors, and dozens of HBC volunteer members. Ron Laurence
is a committee member and Laurence-Hovenier, Inc. is a long-time
supporter of this event. |
